Once you get organized, you want it to last. If you live with other people, EVERYONE must get on board. The question is how do you get others excited about home organization? How do you get them to see that this is the key to improving the day-to-day functioning of the family? Here are a couple things to remember when trying to get everyone involved for long-lasting organization.
- Understand how each person uses the cluttered spaces. Everyone should communicate their needs and what they want to get out of their spaces.
- Notice the natural “dump zones” and create organization around that. Don’t fight what comes naturally, work to contain the clutter where it gathers.
- Editing is a key step in organizing. It’s easier to keep less things in order. This is another opportunity to get household members involved. Emphasizing the benefits of donating helps people let go of what they are no longer using.
- Create systems that work for the whole family. Be realistic about what each member is willing and able to maintain.
- Kids can do more than you think. Teach them to take pride in their belongings as you implement improved systems and “house rules” to keep those systems going.
- Give yourself some grace. You are all learning new systems and skills, so a re-set reorganizing session might be needed. Plan a home re-set with the change of seasons and get the family involved!
